SITU Fabrication assisted artist Teresita Fernández in the design of a major installation for the Madison Square Park Conservancy, NYC, open from May 2015 to January 2016. The installation, titled Fata Morgana, consists of a series of perforated gold mirror discs that are suspended over a 500 foot portion of walkways surrounding the central lawn. Our work with Ms. Fernández entailed developing a variety of disc patterns, a system for layering the discs, and a flexible suspension structure. Once the system was developed, we then populated the walkways with the suspension structure and nearly 300 discs. The design was developed using parametric modeling tools and tested through a series of material studies, models, and mockups.
Fata Morgana was designed by Teresita Fernández in collaboration with SITU Fabrication. Fata Morgana was fabricated by Adirondack Studios. Structural engineering by Thornton Tomasetti. Major exhibition support for Fata Morgana is provided by Lehmann Maupin, New York and Hong Kong, and Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco.
