Working in collaboration with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects and KPF, SITU assisted in the design, engineering and fabrication of the Hudson Yards Plaza Benches. The series of benches provide a total of 75 ft worth of seating and are located at the end of the Highline extension between The Shed and recently completed 10 Hudson Yard buildings.
Using parametric software, SITU created a 3D model to determine seat thickness, spacing and the overall form of the benches. The digital model was translated directly into a full-scale mockup to test drainage, maintenance, material strength and finish. To ensure precision, SITU’s in-house 5-axis CNC router was used to fabricate the 1 1/2" thick ipe slats. The slats are finished with a high-grade natural oil seal to inhibit drastic changes in moisture and allow for the natural beauty of the wood to come through, while steel standoffs allow for a consistent ½” gap between the slats. Glass bead blasted 316 stainless steel alloy was selected for the stanchions and frame as it resists corrosion over time. The end result is an elegant series of undulating benches that will provide plaza seating at Hudson Yards for years to come.
